PRK corrects your vision by gently reshaping the surface of the cornea with a laser. Dr. Ling removes a thin outer layer, applies the laser to reshape the cornea in a matter of seconds, and places a protective contact lens over the eye while the surface heals on its own over the next few days. At your Advanced Vision Consultation, Dr. Ling will walk you through exactly how the procedure would work for your eyes.
PRK Vision Correction in San Francisco
PRK is the original laser vision correction procedure, predating LASIK and SMILE Pro. It reshapes the surface of the cornea without a flap, which makes it a good option for thinner corneas, irregular corneal shape, corneal scarring, and enhancements after prior surgery.

What is PRK eye surgery?
PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is a laser vision correction procedure that reshapes the surface of the cornea with an excimer laser. It corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism without creating a corneal flap.
The difference between LASIK and PRK
Both procedures use the same excimer laser to reshape the same layer of the cornea. The difference is how they get there. LASIK creates a thin flap, treats underneath it, and lays the flap back down, so the surface heals almost immediately. PRK removes the surface layer instead and lets it grow back.
That's why LASIK recovery is faster, and why PRK is the better option when a flap isn't a good idea: when the cornea is thin relative to the prescription, when its contour is irregular, or when there's a scar from an old injury or infection. Both procedures end up in the same place. They take different routes to get there.
Who PRK is right for
PRK is the best procedure for certain combinations of eye anatomy and prescription. Common reasons Dr. Ling recommends it:
- A cornea that is thin relative to your prescription
- An irregular corneal contour
- A corneal scar from an injury or infection that rules out LASIK or SMILE
- An enhancement after previous LASIK or SMILE
Your Advanced Vision Consultation confirms which laser procedure fits your eyes. If PRK is the right one, Dr. Ling will explain why.
